The scenery along the South Santiam is outstanding. Bearded moss hangs like tinsel on a Christmas tree. Huge boulders, carved basalt channels, and a deep gorge entertain paddlers' senses. Fall colors intermix with evergreens to provide the full spectrum of earthtones, dazzling the eyes. You won't have much time to notice your surroundings, though, since the rapids along the upper river are very demanding Class IV, V, and VI drops. Many are on the plus side of the scale at moderate to high flows. Scout carefully and run cautiously, looking out for wood. some drops require difficult scout or portages. For advanced and expert paddlers, it's a wonderland.
