Island Lake Professional Review and Guide
"Island Lake, at 40 acres, is very pretty, amazingly clear considering how shallow it is, and the largest lake in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. The south end offers the best perspective on the lake’s size and is the best place to view the island.
If you make your way off trail, around to Island Lake’s western shore, then head west through the woods, you quickly arrive at the much more secluded, 14-acre Dee Lake. The Blue Canyon Trail passes fairly close to Dee Lake, 1 mile before the trail ends at the Red Lake Trail junction. Beyond Island Lake’s south end, it’s 0.5 mile to the junction with the Red Lake Trail (987). Turn left (west) and walk for 0.3 mile for a view of Island Lake that has Mount McLoughlin rising in the distance, the only real highlight of the topography here. Island Lake doesn’t appear as large from the north end because the island blends in with the shore and most of the lake’s expansive south end can’t be seen."
