Willamette River: Buena Vista to Independence Professional Review and Guide
"Wells Island lies in the river just north of the ferry route. A mile long, the island is a county park with facilities for camping and picnicking. Water is not available on the island, but can be brought over from Buena Vista Park. The main channel of the river is to the east of Wells Island. The channel west of Wells Island is not reliable; it may be choked with debris, have some rough water, or both.
Below Wells Island, the Willamette is usually wide and smooth, but some tight corners can be encountered in some years. Near the east bank lies the community of Sidney. Under the name of Ankeny’s Landing, the Sidney area was once the major fuel yard of the upper Willamette, where steamboats could lay in a fresh supply of cordwood. Just east of here lies Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge, a large federal reserve devoted primarily to the preservation of wintering grounds for a subspecies of Canada geese, the dusky Canada goose."
