This trip explores the immense Chetco River canyon, both from the ocean’s edge and high up the canyon’s sides. It’s the closest you can get by car to the roadless and trailless Big Craggies Botanical Area. The drive also features Snow Camp Lookout, many side roads and trailheads, and the northernmost redwood grove. The drive up the Chetco is impressive. It is level and paved for the first 21 miles, to the bridge over the river. Loeb State Park, at mile 7, has a nature trail through a myrtlewood grove and connects to a Forest Service trail through the northernmost redwood grove in the United States. Redwoods are exceedingly rare in Oregon (Drive 22 visits another grove). Little Redwood Campground, 5 miles beyond Loeb Park, is also home to a few little redwoods.
