Whether you’re a dayhiker or an overnighter, you won’t find much of a challenge here: The total elevation gain averages less than 200 feet per mile, making this an easy-toreach, easy-to-hike introduction to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the world of mountain lakes.

The scenery if worthy of five stars but, on the hike we did from the lower trailhead in to the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness boundary (about 8 miles roundtrip), there was too much closeness to the road and to car campers for that extra star. Nevertheless, a beautiful hike with a boulder-strewn river, some genuine old growth and an excellent packed-earth trail. Next time, we will start from the "middle" section by the road bridge and continue a few miles into the designated wilderness. Bonus: Back in Zig Zag, the road leading to spectacular Ramona Falls' trailhead is only a few yards away.
