Typically a pool drop river, the Snake allows plenty of time to retrieve flipped boats and swimmers below the major rapids, if the water flows are between 6000 and 8000 cfs. The rapids can usually be negotiated by the average boater. Skilled river runners find tremendous challenge as the water level increases and the big drops become bigger, the water pushier, and the flow much faster. Biggest water is encountered at about 20,000 cfs; above this level, the rapids begin to wash out slightly while strong eddy lines and currents begin to develop. Flows in the spring and early summer can easily reach 60,000 cfs at the put-in and may double after the Salmon enters at 61 miles from the put-in. Character: desert canyon; roadless.
