Pilot Butte State Park

Pilot Butte State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Pilot Butte State Park looms over the city of Bend like a castle turret. It’s an iconic landmark and is used by many locals to orient themselves around town.

With its trails up, down, and around the butte, not only does it serve as a popular spot for a quick walk, run, or bike, but the 360-degree views at the top make it a popular spot to watch the sunrise and sunset. Each year, Pilot Butte puts on its own show July 4, when it serves as the launchpad for the city’s annual Independence Day ?reworks display."

"Pilot Butte is one of the most identifiable geographical landmarks within Bend’s city limits, and it’s certainly a great stop. The cinder cone on the northeast side of town has two different spiraling paths up the hill—one for cars, and one for hikers— providing convenient urban excursions for all ability levels." Read more

"This popular urban hike takes you to the summit of Pilot Butte— a prominent cinder cone and landmark in downtown Bend. You will follow the scenic Bob Bristol Nature Trail 480 feet to the summit where you’ll have fantastic views of Mount Bachelor, the Three Sisters, Broken Top, Black Butte, and many other Cascade peaks. There are additional trail options in this park. You can follow the Base Trail, which is a mile-long trail that circles the base of Pilot Butte, and you also have the option of hiking .4 miles out and back on the Larkspur Trail, which takes you to the Bend Senior Center and Larkspur Park. You can also follow and alternate summit trail that parallels the paved road to the summit or walk on the jogging track in the park." Read more

Just hiked the butte after a couple men lit off some illegal fireworks on the 4th and burned 10 acres. Some fellow hikers suggested those two should replant the areas they burned! We are so lucky to have this right in the middle of our town.

This was a lot of fun. I did it on my own one day and then went with my young daughter the next. She and I did about half of it barefoot. Fantastic views, well maintained, but busy.
