The Deschutes River has many faces, ranging from a warm smile of flatwater to an angry, snarling glare of whitewater and waterfalls, paired with a hot, sweaty brow marked by its lower desert canyons. The Upper Deschutes offers a wide variety in itself. Overall, a meandering, high desert river with abrupt lava falls.

The first two days are very slow, but the two class III+ rapids on day three made up for some of the slowness. Dry terrain and rocky campsites.
