Deschutes River, Central - Bend to Lake Billy Chinook Professional Review and Guide
"Most of the Central Deschutes River gets diverted for irrigation at Bend and below. Only during winter and early spring is the flow adequate for paddlers. The river can be divided into two separate sections, both Class IV; the upper, Class IV stretch begins near Bend, while the lower run drops into the deep canyon gorge leading to Lake Billy Chinook. Many Bend area paddlers enjoy the upper stretch after work on a nice winter afternoon. The river winds through sharp, hard rock before easing toward Tumalo Park."
