This run, known as the Lava Canyon run, starts in the heart of town, but most of the run is in a canyon. The one drawback is that the Deschutes is managed here as an irrigation ditch with all but a trickle of water removed through a canal system, except during winter. Boaters feel conspicuous in Bend with a kayak on the rig while others are laden with skis. Still, occasional warm days November through March provide better boating than skiing. Character: canyon; residential.
