Crater Lake: East Entrance Professional Review and Guide
"Crater Lake National Park in southwest Oregon. Tread: The first .25 mile is gravel. The rest is paved, but if traveled early in the summer, portions will be snow covered. Hazards: the sandy slopes above Pinnacle Valley and on the rim of Crater Lake are very unstable, stay back from the edge. The return descent on the empty road was steep enough to be exhilarating without being frightening. Because I did this ride early in the season, I had to walk across intermittent snowdrifts to reach the rim. Coming back down I was able to ride on top of many of the drifts. This is a long climb at high altitude and can be strenuous if aggressively ridden, butthe moderate grade is easy if taken slowly. It is suitable for beginning riders."
