Lookout Mountain Professional Review and Guide
"One of the easternmost points in this book, Lookout Mountain is also one of the widest and most wonderful viewpoints, stretching from south of the Three Sisters all the way to Mount Rainier and including desert, lakes, and the Columbia River."
--Paul Gerald, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Portland (Menasha Ridge Press).
Although the hike is short, it is fairly challenging. It starts out rather steep for the first mile and then travels through a level section until you make the final ascent to the summit. The Beargrass on the way to the summit was in full bloom and quite spectacular! The entire mountainside was covered in Beargrass and smelled wonderful (except for those with allergies). The final ascent to the summit is a bit of a climb through loose rock and can be dangerous. However, when you reach the summit it is a sight to behold! It was a sunny day with little haze and the view will take your breath away! There is a 360 degree view of all the mountains in the region, and all major volcanoes are there for your viewing pleasure! Enjoy this wonderful hike, but beware that the first mile is steep and the final climb to the summit may not appeal to those with a fear of height..
