Washington Border to Nehalem Bay State Park

Washington Border to Nehalem Bay State Park Professional Review and Guide

"The northern coast of Oregon is as excellent for bicycle touring as it is for sightseeing. The Oregon Coast Bicycle Route starts high above the Columbia River on the Astoria Bridge and follows US 101 from the state border through farm country, past historical landmarks, to the wild and scenic coast. Although the ride is short, you can easily spend 2 days here checking out all the side trips and exploring the many state parks.

The first side trip is into Astoria, where a collection of photographs and memorabilia at the Maritime Museum depicts the colorful marine history of the Oregon Coast, with emphasis on the problems caused by the turbulent entrance to the Columbia River. The Lewis and Clark Expedition ended its westward journey near Astoria in November 1805. A couple of the expedition members spent the winter boiling sea water for salt at a place that is now called Seaside, while the main body of the expedition took shelter from the damp weather at Fort Clatsop. The second side trip leads to a national memorial at the site of the rebuilt fort."

I cycled from Cannon Beach to Nehalem Bay State Park and back. Total about 25 miles in 2 hours. The section between Cannon Beach and Manzinita is quite hilly. There were several pull outs that had great views of the coast. The down side is that 101 has quite a bit of traffic and a normally wide shoulder was covered in sand and gravel because of the weather conditions over the winter months. My experience was that about 90% of the drivers were courteous and gave extra room while others were less courteous, but could have been due to narrow portions of the road. Overall, I do not think I would recommend this ride because of the traffic, but if you are OK with the traffic, then the views are quite nice.
