Ashland is 15 miles north of the California border on Interstate 5. Ashland is a bustling tourist center known for its Shakespearean theater, splendid Victorian homes, and flower-filled landscapes. Two-wheel enthusiasts are drawn here by the area's outstanding mountain biking. A popular local's ride is the 27-mile Watershed Loop. The trip begins and ends in the center of Ashland in Lithia Park. This ride is difficult. The circuit's length and a steep, five-mile climb make it strenuous. The 3,000-foot ascent is followed by 15 miles of level pedaling and easy hills. The loop ends with a six-mile descent back into town. Most of the ride is on good gravel roads. (There are 1.5 miles of pavement.)
