Despite logging in the area, Wiley Creek remains one of the most beautiful creeks in the mid-Cascades. The moss-covered canyon has numerous fun class 3 and 4 rapids. The one drawback is a gate that is often locked on the road about 3 miles from the put-in. Still, the long hike makes this stream even more enticing. Once on the water, you soon forget the hike. The upper part is very technical, with a gradient of 160 fpm. The lower mile, below Cascade Falls, is through a wonderful class 3 gorge. At the end of this mile is Taint Natural, a three-tiered drop featuring a human-made fish ladder on river left. At levels higher than 6 feet, the drop is class 5. Scout/ portage on river right. After another mile of class 3 water, the gradient lessens significantly for 2 miles until Cascade Falls. A boater can either shoot through another human-made fish ladder on the right or over the unbroken top of the ledge on river left. The mile below Cascade Falls is through a wonderful gorge containing several class 3 ledges. Character: forested; canyon.
