Its crystal-clear water, exotic scenery, wilderness setting, and challenging whitewater truly make it a special two- to four-day trip. To really enjoy the experience, take plenty of time. Paddlers can run the 32 - 49 miles in two days, but to do so you must spend so much time focusing on the exciting (and occasionally nerve-racking) whitewater that you miss many of the run's aesthetic qualities. Since the chance of miserable weather here is good, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. If you happen to catch a few days of warm, sunny weather, the Illinois is paradise. To ensure a reasonable trip under any conditions, keep your schedule flexible. Have your boat ready, gear packed, and meals planned, then be ready to hit the road as soon as flows are right and weather looks stable.
