Guilford Lake State Park Professional Review and Guide
"This park has an interesting history, mostly centered on its 396-acre lake. Geologists believe Guilford Lake began as the result of a glacier that settled into a natural depression in the landscape and melted. Over time, the depression shrank and slowly filled in, becoming a swampy bog. It came back to life as a man-made impoundment in 1834. Meant to serve as a feeder reservoir for a canal that was to stretch over 73 miles. When that project closed, the lake was drained and turned into farmland. In time, the state bought it and rebuilt the reservoir."
