Flat Fork Ridge Trail to Pioneer Village

Flat Fork Ridge Trail to Pioneer Village Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Caesar Creek State Park’s 50-plus miles of developed hiking, mountain biking, and bridle trails make it difficult to choose just one route. More than 50 miles of developed trails circle 10,000-acre Caesar Creek Lake.

The 6-mile out-and-back segment from Flat Fork Picnic Area to Pioneer Village offers a little bit of everything at Caesar Creek: fossil hunting, lake views, forest, a rocky bottomed river, shale cliffs, a small waterfall, and a restored pioneer village. Stop by the visitor center to learn more about the natural and human history of this area before hitting the trail."

This is one of my families warm up trails that we use to keep on our toes. it is rather pleasant with good scenery all around. toward the creek when you cross over it, there is an old rope bridge that was starting to show its age. The last time I have been there they had a sign on it that said Closed. The waters were far to swift to cross safely with my kids so we crossed the bridge anyhow. Look for the fossil beds near the flat fork. The kids love to look for fossils here.
One deviation I usually make from the map is to start from the parking lot at the boat ramp at Wellman Meadows and hile to the flat fork picknic area for a lunch, let the kids play, then hike back to the Wellman ramp. round trip is around 6 Miles and takes us just about 3 hours to complete with a 6 year old and a 12 year old. :)

Beautiful fall day helped make up for the poorly mapped trails. Trails were well marked but were impossible to find on the map!

The suspension bridge across the creek is closed, so the hike can't be done as described. Depending on conditions, you might be able to ford the creek, but you need to be very careful

We ended up doing a 13 mile loop which took us about 4 hours. Other than a couple of road portions, we were in the woods and away from the crowds! This is a very good workout up and down ravines. We plan to return earlier in the year to possibly experience some wildflowers and visit the quaint, nearby town of Waynesville, OH.
