Veto Lake

Veto Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Little pressure on a lake that is well off the beaten path. Veto Lake is a nice-looking body of water that appears larger than the stated 160 acres it is supposed to be. A boat ramp, a dock, and wheelchair access are located off Veto Road, east of the small town of Veto. The lake also has a small picnic area and shelter house across from the spillway. Just east of the boat ramp is Lake Road, which turns north and follows the lake’s north shore for approximately 2 miles.

The lake averages 6 to 10 feet deep and is turbid or stained most of the time. The edges are lined with weeds and water willows, and a number of lily-pad fields are located in the lake’s headwaters. Shoreline access is good all along Lake Road, but to reach deep water on the lake’s south shore, you need a boat. The lake apparently floods repeatedly in spring, which is why the Division of Wildlife gave up stocking saugeyes in the late 1990s. Key species: Largemouth bass, spotted bass, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie."
