Trails of Fort Ancient

Trails of Fort Ancient Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Come tour this hilltop circular earthwork built by pre-Columbian Ohioans. The trail system explores the boundaries of this enclosure from its perch high above the Little Miami River. So impressive is the site that it was made Ohio’s first state park back in 1891. Fort Ancient, apparently built for ceremonial purposes, was once thought to be a defensive stronghold. You can tour the grounds and decide for yourself. First you will walk inside the grounds, then come to a perch overlooking the Little Miami Valley. Drop to meet the Little Miami Scenic Trail, then return to a second overlook.

Wind more along the hand-built walls, trying to understand Ohio’s past at this national natural landmark. By the way, a tour of the nearby museum is very worth your time, and helps you not only comprehend Fort Ancient but also additional Ohio Indian history."
