Five Oaks to Kokomo Wetland Trail

Five Oaks to Kokomo Wetland Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Slate Run Metro Park is an outstanding example of environmental restoration. Just twenty years ago, most of this park was a cornfield. Today it combines 6.6 miles’ worth of park trails through an oak forest surrounding the shale-bottomed (and misnamed).

Based on soil and groundwater conditions, park naturalists believe that the land now comprising Slate Run Metro Park was originally a meadowy wetland. In 1995 and 1996 the park reverted a portion of its lands to grasslands. Species you’ll see growing here include Kentucky bluegrass, short fescue, ashy sunflower, purple bergamot, and butterfly milkweed."

Walked the entire park. Lots of Ticks in the Prairie area, picked 10 off after a few minutes of walking. We had the Prairie and Wetlands to ourselves, The trail near the farm and in the woods was very busy. Nice walk not very physical only one very short climb.

Without a doubt, this is the best Metro Park as far as scale, quality of the trails and signage, and landscape. There are a number of the portions of this trail that are in open field and can be quite difficult on a hot day with flying insects swarming you.
