Shallenberger State Nature Preserve

Shallenberger State Nature Preserve Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike explores a protected state nature preserve in Fairfield County near the town of Lancaster. You will start out cruising the slopes of Allen Knob, which rises 240 feet above the surrounding terrain.

The rich woods below the knob are a great spring wildflower destination. Next, travel to the top of Allen Knob, with its rock outcrops and partial views. The final part of the hike returns you to the trailhead."

"Enter at the base of the tallest of the two forest-covered, rocky knobs and remain under tree canopy for the entire hike. Circle the knob base and then climb a steep spur trail for a view from the top. Return to the main trail and cross a shallow ravine to reach the second smaller knob. A pleasant forest walk among old and young trees swings out and along the northern border of the nature preserve. Before rejoining the main trail near the trailhead, a glance up at the big rocky knob reveals its massive sandstone heart." Read more
