This was my first time on the Vermilion River. I know it is shallow so we started off with kayaks from the South Street Boat Launch and went upriver. The sanitation outflow is right next to the boat launch so once you get upstream from that there's less of an icky feeling. We were able to navigate all the way up to the RT 2 bridge which we estimate was about 2.25 miles and took 1 hour to paddle. These are class I conditions suitable for beginners and once you get past the campgrounds is scenic. We pulled out in a shallow spot and portaged easily with the kayak on a rope near the RT 2 bridge and then scouted ahead. The water moves a little more on up so we figured launching from Mill Hollow Bacon Woods Park 1 mile up should not be a problem. Hazards are easy to navigate around because the water doesn't move very fast. Plenty of safe pull outs to rest. Lots of shore birds and I think I caught a bald eagle go by. Topped off with dinner at Quaker Steak and a few beers. Note the ODNR River Guide map has the wrong address for the South Street launch. It is 799 River Rd. not 777. You have to pay $3 to launch but its convenient and nice there.
