Stages Pond State Nature Preserve

Stages Pond State Nature Preserve Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Stages Pond turns the argument on its head that Ohio’s flatlands offer little for the nature enthusiast. A walk here divulges another side of central Ohio and presents opportunities for birders and other wildlife enthusiasts.

First you will visit a smaller pond with a wildlife blind, then walk through former fields, now a transitional mix of ecotones, before reaching Stages Pond, created from glacial ice melt. Cruise past wetlands that change with the seasons before making a loop in tall woods that form a shady harbor among the meadows and croplands."

"The trails at this out-of-the-way state nature preserve are also less traveled, creating a true wildlife sanctuary. Near the parking lot, you can access a level spur trail to a waterfowl blind. A walk around the perimeter of an old meadow leads to a second blind watching over a kettle lake. A young, brushy forest is popular among birders, and the trail that infiltrates it has a few benches trailside for birdwatching. The preserve is surrounded by agricultural fields, which also attract wildlife. Migrating waterfowl flying over central Ohio often stop here to refuel." Read more
