Hueston Woods State Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"A visit to Hueston Woods offers two ways to get a glimpse of Ohio’s past. First, there’s the park’s limestone bedrock. This area was once under a shallow sea and that magnesium-bearing dolomite rock offers proof in the form of marine animal fossils. People from all over the world come to the park’s two designated fossil collection areas, one at each end of the lake, to explore. The state’s Division of Geological Survey publishes a field guide, “Fossils of Ohio,” that you might want to pick up before arriving. It will help you identify what you’re seeing. The park staff regularly leads field trip-style programs to this area, too."
