Glendale One of America’s Earliest Planned Suburbs

Glendale: One of America’s Earliest Planned Suburbs Professional Review and Guide

"Founded in 1851, Glendale is one of the earliest planned suburbs in America and the oldest in Ohio. It may well be the first with a curvilinear plan—most often used in subdivisions intended for wealthier communities—and is considered the first planned railroad commuter town in the United States.

Some historians claim that Glendale is America’s earliest planned suburb. It predates Riverside (1869) and Lake Forest (1856) near Chicago, Llewellyn Park (1853) in New Jersey, and little Evergreen Hamlet (1851) outside Pittsburgh with four houses."
