Hinckley Lake to Whipps Ledges Trail Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Hinckley Reservation is one of the best known in the Cleveland Metroparks system. The reservation gets its fifteen minutes of fame every year with the return of the buzzards. For locals, its 25 miles of trails are just as popular. Bird-watchers and other curious folks gather every March to celebrate the harbinger-of-spring return of the buzzards, large bald-headed scavengers, also known as turkey vultures.

The Annual Return of the Buzzards is a park event every March 15, when the buzzards supposedly return like clockwork. The celebration motto is “No one spots a buzzard until the Official Buzzard Spotter spots one first!”"

The trail has some spectacular scenery and is moderately challenging, if short. The only issue I had was that the Whipps Ledges trail is the worst-marked trail I've ever seen. The only marker is down at the trailhead, and after that you're on your own. There were several times where I wasn't sure I was even on the trail at all. Part of the trail also hooks up with the Buckeye Trail, and there's no markers at all to tell you which way to go. Fortunately, I was aware that the blue marks on the trees indicated the Buckeye Trail, however not everyone knows that, so it's very possible for someone to think they're on the WL trail when they're actually wandering down the Buckeye.

I really liked this trail. It starts off running alongside Hinckley Lake, which is pretty large, with a variety of birds to be seen (we saw a couple of blue heron). It then runs through a forest foot-path (pretty wet underfoot - hiking boots required), before finishing at the Ledges, which are about as impressive a rock formation as you'll find in Ohio. This is one of the best hikes we've done in the Cleveland area. (It gets four stars because a five-star hike requires mountains.)
