Rockhouse to Athens Trail Loop Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"With help from the state’s Clean Ohio Fund and the Athens Conservancy, the city of Athens was able to purchase the “missing link” property between the city-owned Sells Park and Strouds Run State Park. The result? Nearly 30 miles of hiking and biking trails, all accessible from a trailhead at the end of a neighborhood street, just minutes from this hip college town's main shopping district. On this hike, walk around a small pond, past rock outcroppings, and to a recess cave before returning on the ridgetop that overlooks an old-growth forest to the north.
For years, locals enjoyed the trails in Athen's Sells Park while both locals and out-of-towners took advantage of the many trails in Strouds Run State Park. Though less than half a mile of land separated these two parks, the fact that it was held in private ownership made a Sells-to-Strouds trek out of the question. The private land, known as Hawk Woods, was also familiar to botanists because of its status as an old-growth forest."
