Bashakill Wildlife Management Area

Bashakill Wildlife Management Area Professional Review and Guide

"At this 2,200-acre wildlife management and bird conservation area— more than half of it freshwater wetland—a former railroad grade rolls out an avenue to relaxation and nature discovery. Part of the greater Long Path, this rail- to- trail travels at the eastern edge of Bashakill Marsh, which is the largest freshwater marsh in southeastern New York.

A premier bird-watching site, birders delight in spring- nesting warblers and waterfowl, brooding summer birds, and fall migrants. Both daylight and evening watches are possible. Six trailheads access the rail trail, readily allowing hopscotch or car- shuttle travel."

"This trail runs along an abandoned railroad corridor and is graded for comfortable riding. The tracks have long since been removed, and the wide path is flat and level and travels through a fascinating wildlife area known as the Bashakill Wildlife Management Area. In total, more than 10 miles of riding are possible on the old railway bed, providing a perfect opportunity to experience this unique resource.

More than 5 miles run along the eastern side of the 2,175 acres, and there’s more mileage after the path leaves the northern edge of this multiple-use area. The operative word is cruising. There will not be a lot of steep, winding singletrack to test your skills, just a long straight path through the natural beauty of a lowland freshwater wetland, the largest in southeastern New York."

This is between 'Hugenot', 'Cuddlebackville' and Wurtrsboro'.It is a nice area but the marshes are hard to walk in. One could drive by the marshes but it is a very slender road. They have a quaint vineyard , and a great variety of birds.

This was a nice relaxing ride. FYI part of this trail runs along the back of a few yards (you can hardly see them), but the other side you feel some seclusion. There is wonderful mountain views and tons of birds, deer, beaver to watch. Part of the trail was submerged in water, but not for that long. We just started from the other direction and saved that part for last. This is a perfect, went camping all weekend and want to go for a leisurely bikeride on the way home type of trail.
