Westhampton Beach Professional Review and Guide
"The village of West Hampton Dunes is situated on a barrier island that was originally part of Fire Island. A nor’easter split Fire Island in two in 1931, followed by a hurricane in 1938; the two storms widened Moriches Inlet and devastated the resort town of Westhampton Beach, whose residents moved farther inland.
West Hampton Dunes would struggle as a small village of the no-longer contiguous Brookhaven, now 20 miles away via a land route through Southampton, and would be nearly obliterated by a string of powerful storms and hurricanes in the 1991, 1992, and 1993. Fearing for their future, residents incorporated it as an independent village in 1993 and elected their first and to-date only mayor, who over saw the rebuilding of the beach. The project was so successful that it is now used as a model for other restoration works, and the beach is considered one of the top restored beaches in America."
