Murphy Lake Trail

Murphy Lake Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"North of Northville, this easy hike along a time- worn, centuries- old road accesses three sparkling lakes—Bennett, Middle, and Murphy— cradled in the quiet wooded beauty of the Southern Adirondacks.

Fishing, camping, a historic settlement site, loons, and colorful fall foliage all help sell the trail. Because of its gentle grade and multiple stops, it makes a fine first backpack for the family."

Went in from Pumpkin Hollow rd near Wells with some Boy Scouts and adults to gain winter camping experience for the kids. Destination was Murphy Lake lean to (apprx 4 miles)but the walking (in snowshoes) was more fatiguing on the group than expected and so camp was made in a dense ppine forest near a pond approx 2.5 miles in. The dense trees procided good shelter from the winds that kicked up a bit Sat night. Each person carried full packs in plastic sleds towed behind. Approx 1 ft of snow on the ground in the woods. Trail was firm from prior snowmobile use with 2-3 inches fresh snow atop that. Despite the long weekend and relatively good weather, no snowmobiles were seen all weekend. An additional 1 foot of snow would have been helpful as the sleds got hung up and rolled over quite a bit on the semi covered rocks and logs on the trail under the existing snow cover. The largest creek (which is running hard) about 1.5 miles in has a great bridge, but the creek has ooverrun its banks and flooded the area immediately preceeding the bridge. This presented some challenges with full packs and gear but should be no problem for the day tripper. Next time I would take the alternate approach from Creek Road as I remember it being more conducive to this type of trip.

I have been hiking this trail all of my life. (I'm 56). When I first started, I was too young to hike- so my lumberjack cousin (he really did lumberjack for a living) used to carry me on his shoulders.I see where people say the bugs are too bad; it's worth it ! If you want my experiences over the years- places to fish-some of the folk lore history-drop me a line. But- DO start at Pumkin Hollow road and venture thru to Creek Road. That route allows you the easiest walking and a most enjoyable trip. Enjoy !
