Overlook Mountain Hike

Overlook Mountain Hike Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"While the southern approach to Overlook Mountain is perhaps the most popular peak climb in the entire Catskills, this hike offers an alternative approach, arriving from the north. The route is indeed longer, but it offers a comfortable grade, pleasant backdrop, points of interest, and fewer travelers.

A detour en route finds charming Echo Lake, another endorsement. But however you choose to reach the mountaintop, the lookout tower, now in its second life thanks to dedicated volunteers, caps the journey with grand overlooks of the Catskill neighborhood."

We like this trail in the winter because the views are better earlier on. This is not a 13 mile hike if you start outside of Woodstock by the Budist Monastary. It is 2.5 miles 1 way. Neat old mountain house ruins and the fire tower at the top gives you an added bonus. There is trailhead parking.

A wonderful Catskills hike in any season...go mid-week, early in the summer/late spring and you'll have the trail to yourself. Winter hiking can get a little icey, so watch your footing. The start is an ankle bender, but the trail smooths out higher up just as the views invite your stare.

This is a very boring hike, if you could call it that. I use it to train during the winter. If you want to do a fairly easy hike do Huckleberry Point or a great, but more difficult hike such as Wittenberg. This is just a long walk up a steep road for 2.5 miiles, unless you want to see the ruins of the old Catskill Mtn. House.

While the Overlook Trail is not very challenging, it provides great opportunities that many trails do not in the Catskill Region. The trail is a old road that leads to a recently-restored fire tower that is now open to the public and staffed by an interpreter on weekends. You also pass by ruins of the famous Overlook Hotel, which when in operation was the highest (elevation) such large hotel in the State. The trail is often crowded on weekends because of its proximity to Woodstock - however construction of a new parking area/trailhead is in the planning stages. Incredible views of the Hudson Valley, Catskill High Peaks, and Ashokan Reservoir await. You will enjoy!
