Nuclear Lake

Nuclear Lake Professional Review and Guide

"This hike uses the infrequently traveled Beekman Uplands Trail in conjunction with the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) to create a loop hike that provides a nice alternative to the standard loop that most people make around Nuclear Lake.

Nuclear Lake is so named because the area around the lake was purchased in 1955 by an outfit called Nuclear Development Associates and used as a nuclear research facility. The Federal Atomic Energy Commission sponsored work there until 1972, when there was a bit of an accident. An explosion in one of the laboratories shattered some windows, which spread an undetermined amount of plutonium around the area. Cleanup efforts costing millions of dollars ensued, and the place was declared safe in 1975."
