Nissequogue River Professional Review and Guide
"When beginning your trip from the Smithtown put-in, head south after entering the water and you will quickly reach a fork in the river. Taking either branch will allow you to explore the small dam and pond found there. The dam, built in the early 1800s, was used to power the local gristmill, remnants of which still stand along the riverbanks. After exploring this small section of river, turn around and head north, paddling under the concrete overpass for NY 25A. The road does add a lot of noise to the river, but that noise soon fades, leaving you with only the sounds of wildlife."
