Shindagin Hollow State Forest

Shindagin Hollow State Forest Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Shindagin Hollow is a favorite spot for mountain bikers. However, their tracks and the hiking trails seldom share the same route. Even if the parking areas seem full, few of the visitors will actually be found along the hiking trails. Hiked either as a loop or an out-and-back, this trail has a lot of climbs and descents and is a great choice for hikers wanting a little more of a challenge compared to other trails in the region."

"Shindagin Hollow is a long, deep north-south valley, almost gorge-like in appearance. It was once the site of a well-used Native American trail that connected two other active trails — the Onondaga-Owego Trail and the Cayuga-Owego Trail. Today it’s a state forest, known as “The Promised Land” to mountain bikers. It’s crossed by miles of challenging singletrack filled with roots, rocks, steep climbs and mind-blowing descents. The Finger Lakes Trail winds through this forest and offers a hikers-only option for enjoying this rugged terrain." Read more

The route as described through the Gulf Creek Rd. parking spot is well marked. Between here and the Jeep Road is an ATV trail which is somewhat rutted from use. There are no markings along this section. It turns left into the forest about 100 to 200 feet past the parking area where the tree plantings start. I encountered a "train" of 10 or more ATVs along this section. The creek crossing before reaching Shindagin Hollow Rd at the Jeep Trail can be a bit obscure. It likely would be difficult in high water. After reaching S. H. Rd you have to turn first to the right to get to the Jeep Trail junction and then back left onto that road. Although I was closely looking for it, I missed the Finger Lakes Trail crossing. I don't recall any markings. I believe I ended up on the fainter trail to the left on the map based on my topo and GPS route trace. The trail was well used. Eventually I found a faint although very clear trail heading down towards where the FL Trail is marked near the "W" at the lower part of the map. After going cross-country a bit to the east I encountered the blazed FL Trail heading east a short ways before the S. H. Road.
