Shelter Island and Mashomack Preserve Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"To paddle along the pristine shoreline of the Mashomack Preserve, you must fi rst cross the small stretch of water between North Haven and Shelter Island. Although it may seem straightforward and easy, the 0.3-mile crossing can be diffi cult at times, with wind, tidal currents, and the comings and goings of the South Ferry conspiring to make your trip a bit of a challenge. If you should arrive at the ferry terminal in North Haven and fi nd conditions unsuitable for crossing, a better and safer option is to take the ferry across to Shelter Island and launch from the put-in on Thompson Road instead. Under such circumstances, purchasing the $15 round-trip ticket will be well worth the trouble it saves."
