Shelter Island Loop

Shelter Island Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Shelter Island is rich in history and natural beauty, only a short ferry ride from the North and South Forks. The island was settled nearly 4,000 years ago by Algonquian-speaking people, erroneously called the Manhanset, who were largely assimilated by European settlers.

The island is a popular tourism spot, but one-third of the land is set aside as nature preserve, protecting it from overdevelopment. Traffic tends to be slower on Shelter Island, especially when busy. Drivers are used to seeing cyclists on these popular riding roads."
