Poets’ Walk Park Professional Review and Guide
"Romantic, idyllic, pastoral, inspirational—this hike is all of these and more. If you’re thinking about writing a poem, a story, or the great American novel, and you’re wondering where you will ever find your Muse, you may discover your errant sprite while considering the wonders of nature in this contemplative place. Poets’ Walk began as the vision of landscape architect Hans Jacob Ehlers, who was hired by landowners Frank H. Delano and his wife, Laura Astor Delano, to improve the grounds of their estate. Inspired by the land’s location and by stories of writers Washington Irving and Fitz-Green Halleck strolling here, Ehlers created the path we walk today as a connecting trail between outdoor “rooms,” moving from wide views atop grassy hills to cozy sylvan glades. He intended Poets’ Walk as a celebration of nature and its connection with art, and the popularity of this little linear park gives testimony to the architect’s success. You may note the lack of industrial or mercantile encroachment around the edges of this park. Scenic Hudson deserves the credit for this. It secured conservation easements on 800 acres of surrounding property, ensuring that development will not mar the pastoral atmosphere of this lovely place."
