Lewis A. Swyer Preserve Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"In the mood for something exotic? This boardwalk ramble takes you to a freshwater marsh and swamp that surround you with tall vegetation. You may live in the Hudson River Valley your entire life without coming upon Mill Creek, a quiet tributary that penetrates the river’s eastern bank near Stuyvesant Landing. Here at the edge of the Hudson, Mill Creek enjoys the ebb and flow of the tide—yes, the Atlantic Ocean’s tide some 150 miles south. Salt water does not find its way this far upriver, however, so Mill Creek and its surroundings have formed a freshwater marsh and swamp, a place where water flows in and out, covering the submerged land with nutrients that nurture a distinctive and verdant ecosystem."
