Erie Canal - Oxbow Loop

Erie Canal - Oxbow Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The original Erie Canal (Clinton's Ditch) had more curves than today's canal. When the canal was widened, deepened and rerouted south of Rochester, many loops and turns were eliminated. A straight embankment and towpath were built (today’s Erie Canalway Trail), allowing the water to fill the entire old loop creating a widewater. The widewater in Perinton (in what used to be Fullam's Basin) is called the Oxbow. By the 1930s the Oxbow was dotted with summer cottages. These dilapidated into squatter homes by the 1970s, but only a few remain today. The islands in front of the Oxbow are the artificial result of many years of dredging. The northernmost channel is filling in with siltation and encroaching cattails, but it is still passable to paddle craft."
