Irondequoit Creek Ellison Park to Irondequoit Bay

Irondequoit Creek (Ellison Park to Irondequoit Bay) Professional Review and Guide

"You have two options for paddling Irondequoit Creek. One is to start in Ellison Park (or upstream from behind Panorama Plaza in Penfield) and paddle downstream to Irondequoit Bay as described below. The second option is to start at Irondequoit Bay and paddle upstream a ways then turn around and return to the starting point. The current is not strong (except after significant spring melts or a heavy rain storm), so it’s easy to do a round trip. The cattail marshes between Browncroft and Empire Boulevards are fun to explore with lots of nooks and crannies. A variety of birds either live or migrate through here. Mute swans, green herons, moorhens, kingbirds and ducks have been spotted."

Paddled this several times with my wife, this trip being the most recent. There were some trees down across the creek that made it more interesting; one managed to put a flat in my kayak caddie (a one-in-a-million bad-luck moment). This can be a really relaxing, beautiful ride, at a calm pace if you don't want to paddle at all. We've taken it to the mouth in the Irondequoit Bay, but also jumped out part-way through in the park and walked back to the car for a short trip. Summer of 2017, they came through and "cleaned up" (brush-hogged) the banks on the creek on the south side of Blossom Rd.

I have done this trip many times, with many people. There are a couple ways to go. The easiest way is to take a car and drop it off at the Bay, at the parking area across from Bay Creek. Then take a car up to Ellison, put in and float on down. The harder way is to start at the Bay, paddle upstream. It's fairly easy going until you get up to around Atlantic/Browncroft. There the current picks up and you will be paddling against the current. Most of the time it isn't that bad, but ther are places you'll need to be more than a casual paddler to keep from drifting back downstream. The wildlife along this trip is amazing. Bring a camera. I've seen swans, geese, ducks, turtles, snakes, red-winged blackbirds, blue herons, kingfishers, turkey vultures and even the bald eagles while paddling up through here.
