Take your first steps on the Appalachian Trail in this delicious little preserve, where the cool forest hides a waterfall and lots of tiny streams. Rescued by concerned neighbors and the Nature Conservancy from centuries of settlement, grazing, and logging, Pawling Nature Preserve now features hemlock and second-growth oak forests, healthy wetlands, and an impressively rocky gorge. The dominant feature, the 1,053-foot Hammersly Ridge, towers over the gorge and provides a vantage point for views of the adjacent Great Swamp—if you choose to climb to its summit.
