Hooper Garnet Mine Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Bring your rock hammer and make the most of this abandoned mine, where gemstones sparkle on the surfaces of ancient rock.
A fairly rugged hike along cross-country ski trails to a rocky incline, this trek to the Hooper Garnet Mine rewards in unusual ways. There’s the tangible reward of collecting actual garnets, a red gemstone, and bringing back these sparkly stones as souvenirs of your efforts.
Beyond the gems, this spot offers one of the best views of the High Peaks region for the least actual effort. You will pay for these benefits, however, as you walk up the boulder-strewn slope to get to the former mine. Boots with ankle support are a necessity for this trail, as the trail itself serves as a route for spring runoff from the mountains—bringing all the
loose rocks down the hill every year and leaving them scattered throughout the trail."
