Lake Harris Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"As you drive to Lake Harris Campground on the curvy mountain road known as NY Route 28, look for signs depicting the silhouette of a man with glasses and a moustache. That’s Theodore Roosevelt, all right. While camping on Mount Marcy on September 14, 1901, Teddy received word that President William McKinley had been shot and was not expected to recover. His party quickly hiked 10 miles down to Long Lake and Roosevelt continued west in a frantic nighttime stagecoach ride to the nearest train station. Arriving in North Creek, he discovered that McKinley had died and that he was now president."
