Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Minnewaska State Park Preserve Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A former resort and the one- time battleground between developers and environmentalists, this state park preserve unfurls a welcoming and tranquil natural realm. The site boasts white- cliff escarpments, indigo waters, and soothing forests—images to delight poet and photographer.

Comfortable carriageways and foot trails travel the preserve. The selected carriageway circuit travels from Lake Minnewaska, around Lake Awosting, and across a Shawangunk escarpment rim for a visually rich experience."

Amazing views and overall awesome trail. You can also leave the main trail and check out many of the side trails. I went during peak weekend last year and will be going back again this year!

We took Blue (Castle Point) trail from Lake Minnewaska - lovely views! Not hard, just long, on carriage trails. We took Green carriage trail on the return (passing by but skipping the Falls); it was just shady and pleasant, no great views. Advice: bring towels and bathing suits and swim both lakes - wish we had!

absolutely breathtaking. it is a relatively easy hike -- not a lot of climbing because you are walking on carriage trails although it is very long -- but the lakes, vistas and outcroppings are truly stunning. we took the detour to the waterfall (which involves more strenuous hiking) but it was barely a trickle of water because it was autumn. it was still interesting. we did spot a snake with a frog in its mouth! the vibrant and colorful leaves also added to the magic of the moment. this was, by far, one of the best hikes we've ever done. it is highly recommended!

Took red to blue carriage trail to Castle Point then took Blueberry foot trail back to main parking lot. Castle Point beautiful lookout over valley though walk there was not overly exciting. Path back was more challenging and interesting.

Minnewaska is an absolutely beautiful park. There are miles of carriage trails and spectacular views of the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson Valley. It is situated in the Shawungunk Mountains on Routes 44/55 in New Paltz, close to the NYS Thruway. During summer weekends there is usually a wait to get into the parking areas...
