"Most of the 1038 acres comprising Mountain Lakes County Park was originally purchased from the Long Pond Indians of the Wappinger Tribe in 1727. Formerly a summer camp, the northernmost park in Westchester County also boasts the county’s highest peak at 982 feet. Don’t let the elevation dissuade you. The hike rolls gently across forested terrain with four beautiful lakes for you and your dog to enjoy."

I hiked the loop outlined in the guide, Best Hikes With Dogs: NYC & Beyond. What the writer fails to note is the lack of trail maintenance and consistency of blazing. There were a few times I had to bushwhack to find the trail I was looking for, as well as backtrack after missing a turn because of poor markings. Aside for that, though, it was a pleasant hike. We started our hike from the wrong place, near the park office (which was closed at this time of year), but got on the Orange trail and followed it back to Hawley Road, which is where we should have started. The trails in this park are mostly access roads to camps. The lakes are lovely, but new development of camping houses that remind one of Mongolian yurts is taking place along portions of the trail route described in the guide given in "Best hikes with dogs." Only the bactrian camels are missing. As such, portions of the trail described in the guide are obscured by new cabins and constructions that promise a McDonalds or Starbucks in the woods. The topo provides the route of the orange blazed trail, which I recommend following, although it only passes by Little and Big Pine Lakes. The park office, when open, may have current maps, but development of this park for summer residential camps is clearly obscuring trails described in the guide offered by trails.com
