Millbrook Mountain Carriage Road Professional Reviews and Guides

"This hike follows the Lake Minnewaska loop for the first 0.8 mile, then leaves the mellow carriage path for wilder terrain and more demanding hiking. You can enjoy water views on the initial and final legs of the hike, and in between you’ll have breathtaking views from Millbrook Mountain’s summit and explore some of the more remote corners of Minnewaska State Park."

We accidentally ended up hiking in the reverse direction that the guide suggests, heading down the western shore of Lake Minnewaska and taking the Millbrook Drive. I suggest doing just that and leaving the best part, Millbrook Mountain Path, till the end of your trip! The kids had a rush of energy when we discovered the narrow rocky path winding through mildly dense forest. A stream at the nadir of the path was a tremendous and fun reward for them after more than 3 miles of hiking. Then, as you emerge from the path, there's a wonderful place at the shore of Lake Minnewaska. The kids can refresh by wading in the somewhat chilly waters of the Lake. If you want to actually bathe, there's an official "beach" a few hundred yards further north along the east side of the lake.. If you're hiking with younger kids, you really need to watch out for mountain bikers along the wide well maintained Millbrook Drive. Also beware of the steep cliff at Patterson's Pellet and some other places along the drive as well as the precipice at the top of Millbrok Mountain. The view of the Hudson River Valley on the easterly edge of Millbrook Mountain really is astounding. I highly recommend this hike with kids! But leave yourself at least 1.5 hours more than the hiking time suggested by the guide so your kids have the time to explore the Coxing Kill stream and the lake. We took 6 hours and had to hurry along towards the end to make it back before sunset. Additionally, the rangers at the entrance to the park may direct you to park at the lower parking lot. Beware! It's a long uphill hike on asphalt to where the lake is and the trails start. If you have to park there, tell the rangers you have kids and ask them if they can give you a ride up the mountain (we hitched a ride from a ranger when we were already 1/3 up the steep hill). I took a star away because of the somewhat boring and well maintained aspect of Millbrook Drive.
