Thompson Pond Professional Review and Guide
"Circle a 15,000-year-old glacial kettle lake and discover a hidden wetland at the base of Stissing Mountain. Back when North America was beginning to warm up toward the end of the last Ice Age, a massive chunk of glacial ice scooped out a depression in an area west of today’s Pine Plains. As the ice chunk melted, it filled the depression and created a sizable body of water. Time and erosion have divided this single body into Twin Island Lake, Stissing Pond, and Thompson Pond—and the Nature Conservancy protects Thompson Pond, providing us with recreational access to this unusual kettle pond and its abundance of plant and animal life."
