Tioughnioga River Marathon to Chenango Forks

Tioughnioga River (Marathon to Chenango Forks) Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Tioughnioga (pronounced tie-uff-nee-ohga) River basin was used extensively by Native Americans for fishing and hunting. They named it “river with bank of flowers,” which is a hint of the beauty that awaits the paddler. Looking at the map may turn you away from this waterway. It does parallel many roadways and highways and you’re never out of eyesight or earshot of civilization. Still, this is a very pleasant river to paddle and we recommend you give it a try. The river flows in a wide valley with low banks providing a panoramic view rimmed with farm-dotted hills. For a waterway through civilization, there’s little trash. The banks are lined in daffodils, ferns, or white trillium, depending on when you paddle. You’ll find a gently flowing current in a wide waterway with plenty of islands beckoning you to stop for a break or picnic."

Awesome river kayaking! We normally kayak in lakes and canals. We stumbled upon this while looking for a campground.lighthouse landing campground will shuttle you up the river and you paddle back. The first day we tried the 2 hour trip, the next day we did the 4 hour trip. Beautiful, fun, and relaxing. Very serine. We seen eagles, turtles, heron, egret, ducks, and a muskrat!
