West Village Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Every time you walk the West Village, you’ll find something new. Street patterns and naming conventions here are haphazard, rebellious; they’ve no doubt contributed to the neighborhood’s liveliness over the years. (When the city first began imposing order on Manhattan with a grid system of numbered streets and avenues in 1811, the West Village was exempted, having been established well before the districts farther north.)
Charming town houses and apartment buildings share the air with parks, public institutions, theaters and galleries, houses of worship, and shops selling everything from rare records to gourmet cheese to custom-made string instruments to literature... and much more."
